The purpose of life is to discover your gift.
The work of life is to develop it.
The meaning of life is to give your gift away. ~David S. Viscott

I can think of no better quote to emphasize the whole point of life. We are each here to experience and become, and to help others do the same. Books help us connect our experiences to each other through words, by offering stories and information that speak to and ignite the little spark of light in each of our souls.

I believe everyone can and should write a book. It won’t be easy. Nothing worthwhile ever is. But it could be one experience that changes your trajectory in life both personally and professionally.

Just in case you’re not convinced yet, I’ve put together eight reasons why YOU should write a book this year.

1. You are a writer.

If you think you’re not a writer, think again. Surely you’ve written book reports in school or reviews for a product or letters to a lover. The truth is we are all writers but most of us never practice the craft. My advice to you is to practice writing every day. Journal. Write short stories. Create a how-to article about your favorite hobby or skill. You ARE a writer.

2. It can re-kindle your passion for your gifts.

When was the last time you felt really connected and excited about something? You need to feed that fire to keep it burning and when you write about your passion and gifts your brain gets just as excited as when you’re actually doing it. Did you know that?

3. You will have accomplished something really great.

Over 80% of the population wants to write a book. Only 1% of those people actually do it. Yes, writing a book will be one of the greatest challenges of your life and that is what makes it so rewarding. The more you step outside of your comfort zone and follow through on your dreams, the more confident you will feel.

4. You’ll create a legacy.

Your legacy is what you live behind for others. Do you want to help others discover their gifts, develop their work, and find meaning just as you have? Think about the people in your life who helped to shape you into the person you are today. Were there any books that had an important impact on you? Authors are seen as credible sources of knowledge and experience and when you write a book you can join those ranks and create a legacy for others.

5. You will be of service to others.

When we serve others we step outside of ourselves and see the bigger picture. Being of service means wanting more for others than you want for yourself. It’s always nice to think about what writing a book can do for you, but more importantly if your book helps even one other person to improve their life, isn’t it worth it?

6. It will shape your character and make you a better person.

Writing a book will make you a better writer. It will also make you a better storyteller, teacher, and marketer. Through the experience of writing you may face some demons, you may have to learn how to be vulnerable, and you may discover strengths you never knew you had.

7. You’ll have many opportunities to make money.

Well of course you want you book to be a profitable venture right? Book sales is one way that you can make money from writing a book. You can also use your book as a jumping off point to create a whole business. Having a book can help you get in front of lots of people so you can sell related products and services. The possibilities are endless.

8. Your story matters.

The reason most people DON’T become authors is because they believe that either their story is not interesting enough or there are too many other similar stories out there in the world. I’m here to tell you that you are unique and you have the same value as EVERY other person on the planet. That means your story is unique and has value too.

Don’t wait another day to write your book. This year is the best year for you to step over your fears and accomplish the life changing work of writing a book.
